The notification says 'optional subject: one.' Nothing else is optional.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is prelims, then mains with its essay and general studies papers, then the interview – usually a year per full attempt, with a syllabus spanning history, polity, economy, geography, environment, ethics, science and current affairs that never stops moving. Roughly a thousand candidates are finally selected out of applicants counted in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody clears this exam on talent. They clear it on coverage.

Why toppers' notes are always structural

Ask a topper and you'll find maps everywhere: polity as articles and amendments in relationship, economy as linked sectors, geography feeding environment feeding disaster management. The syllabus is too big for linear reading to survive a year of decay. A 3D map makes the structure visible to everyone – each GS paper a territory, static syllabus as the spine, current affairs attaching themselves to it instead of piling up in a separate folder.

Quick answers

Can I upload my coaching institute's material?
Your files are processed on your own device and never uploaded to anyone. Your sources, your strategy, your preparation – they stay yours.

Current affairs move faster than any map.
Which is why the map holds the static syllabus – the part that decays across a year – and current affairs hook onto their static anchors. News gets dated; the polity behind the news doesn't.
